Tailored blanks are often used in the automotive industry for vehicle chassis construction. These are sheet metal plates composed of different materials and/or sheet thicknesses.
This allows different points in the later component to be adapted to local loads, which otherwise would require additional bracing parts. The advantages are savings in weight and fabrication costs.
